Cobalt’s process for collecting, evaluating, and processing electronics meets the highest possible standards and is designed to maximize the lifespan of your unneeded equipment, with a focus on generating value back to you. Security, peace of mind, and continued usefulness: Retirement doesn’t get better than this.
Obsession with data security has shaped Cobalt’s process for retired hardware across the board, removing every ounce of risk from pickup onward, even when refurbishing and re-selling equipment. And for equipment that truly has reached the end of the line, Cobalt’s customized shredding system leaves every last byte unrecoverable. Few recyclers can offer so many solutions under one roof.
The diagram below walks you through the flow of material from pickup to final disposition and the measures we take to protect you along the way:
Your hardware is in safe hands with our qualified and background-checked staff as they collect, package, and remove your electronics from the facility. This is our signature White Glove Service.
Your assets are protected from damage or risk while in transit to our state-of-the-art processing facility. By using only our own screened and trained drivers and our own fleet of trucks, we ensure your property never leaves our sight.
There are two main methods by which Cobalt eliminates risks to data security: digital sanitization for devices destined for resale, or physical destruction (i.e., shredding) for those that will be recycled. Read our Data Security Policy. Read our Data Security Policy
Cobalt Data Security Policy
Cobalt will provide data destruction for all fixed storage devices. In such cases, Cobalt will perform either software destruction that meets National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Publication 800-88 standards for data sanitization or physical destruction through pulverizing, shredding, or other common destruction methods. Electronic equipment will be transported and recycled or refurbished in full compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations and guidelines. All equipment will be handled in accordance with the Cobalt Recycling Environmental Health and Safety Policy. Data liability is transferred at the point of secure pickup by Cobalt or when dropped off at a certified Cobalt facility.
Data Breaches: Every IT Director’s Worst Nightmare
You don’t have to look far to find examples of companies facing significant security risks, hefty fines and legal fees, and bad publicity because of unsecured data. Choosing Cobalt means protecting yourself against the possibility that your old assets come back to haunt you long after they’re out of sight.
Our state-of-the-art sanitizer uses software that renders stored data completely unrecoverable, with processes that exceed all government standards. Every device is matched to a sanitization report that you can access through our client portal, Lynx.
A second report is generated by an independent re-checking system that tests each device to ensure that it is completely clean. Any device that fails this test is rerouted to the recycling stream for physical destruction, providing 100% assurance that data is unrecoverable.
Electronics destined for recycling travel through an innovative shredding system the length of a football field. It completely destroys the data, and the material can then re-enter the manufacturing process instead of spending eternity in a landfill.
A specialized third-party auditor reinforces your company’s data security by randomly sampling devices to undergo a second series of validation tests, ensuring proper sanitization. This produces a third and final report.
Refurbishment & Resale
Reusing electronics is the best form of recycling. Cobalt handles both preparing and marketing your used assets, delivering more value back to you.
